Stratlets: low Reynolds number point-force solutions in a stratified fluid.
We present fundamental solutions of low Reynolds number flows in a stratified fluid, including the case of a point force (Stokeslet) and a doublet. Stratification dramatically alters the flow by creating toroidal eddies, and velocity decays much faster than in a homogeneous fluid. The fundamental length scale is set by the competition of buoyancy, diffusion and viscosity, and is O(100 μm-1 mm) ...
متن کاملNumerical Study of a Descending Sphere in a Low Reynolds Number Strongly Stratified Fluid
The flow generated by a sphere descending uniformly in a linearly stratified diffusive fluid is investigated numerically for different Reynolds (Re) and Froude (F ) numbers. The parameters used for the simulations were 10 ≤ Re ≤ 10 and 10 ≤ F ≤ 10, keeping the Schmidt number, Sc (= 700, typical of sea water) fixed. The results demonstrate drag dependence on viscosity and stratification, suggest...
متن کاملReynolds number effects in stratified turbulent wakes
We report large-eddy simulations of the turbulent wake of a towed-sphere of diameter D at speed U in a linearly stratified Boussinesq fluid with buoyancy frequency N . These simulations are performed using a spectral-multidomain-penalty-method-based incompressible Navier-Stokes solver for Re ≡ UD/ν ∈ {5 × 10, 10, 4 × 10} and Fr ≡ 2U/(ND) ∈ {4, 16, 64}. Increasingly richer turbulent fine structu...
متن کاملStochastic low Reynolds number swimmers.
As technological advances allow us to fabricate smaller autonomous self-propelled devices, it is clear that at some point directed propulsion could not come from pre-specified deterministic periodic deformation of the swimmer's body and we need to develop strategies for extracting a net directed motion from a series of random transitions in the conformation space of the swimmer. We present a th...
متن کاملA circle swimmer at low Reynolds number.
Swimming in circles occurs in a variety of situations at low Reynolds number. Here we propose a simple model for a swimmer that undergoes circular motion, generalising the model of a linear swimmer proposed by Najafi and Golestanian (Phys. Rev. E 69, 062901 (2004)). Our model consists of three solid spheres arranged in a triangular configuration, joined by two links of time-dependent length. Fo...
